President's Update

14 April 2025
President's Update
Chapter President Col Walter Havenstein, Sr., USMC (Ret)

Greetings once again! A quick update on happenings at your Sandhills Chapter.

Let me start by thanking our Chapter Board Members for their continued work and support. We continued our mission to “Never Stop Serving” by supporting Moore County Veterans and providing scholarships to local JROTC Cadets. We completed our membership renewal process and have 88 active members. This update is being included with our new membership roster. Members met for our January luncheon at Olive Garden in Southern Pines and we’re delighted to have Chris Weber, owner of Railhouse Brewery in Aberdeen as our guest speaker. Due to the interest Chris created we decided to hold an informal lunch at the brewery in March, a fun time for our members. Please refer to our chapter website (www.sandhillsmoaa.org) for the most current information regarding events and activities as well as items of interest to MOAA members.

April Scholarship Luncheon

We will be hosting our annual JROTC Scholarship Awards event on 25 April 25th at the Pinecrest Inn beginning at 11:30 am. This year we will be awarding two scholarships. Cadets from Union Pines High School and Pinecrest High School will be recognized and receive $3,000 scholarships. We hope you plan on attending this important event. Details can be seen on our website.

Veterans Support

This past quarter we have been able to support three students attending Sandhills Community College and have provided funds in the completion of Habitat’s newest veterans home buyer project. That home will be dedicated in Addor on April 25th. Nick Christopher has been instrumental in his liaison role with SCC Veterans Center.

Memorial Day Service

Mark your calendars. We will be hosting the annual Memorial Day Service at the Pinehurst Village Chapel on May 26th. A shoutout to Don Goss for his planning and making arrangements for this event.

Financial Update

As of this month our current account balances are:

Operational Account: $6,836.21

JROTC Scholarship Account: $34,126.65

Veterans Support Fund: $52,758.64

This Fall we will have a busy schedule to include participation in the Holly Arts and Crafts Festival, hosting the annual Veterans Putting Challenge, and hosting our traditional Veterans Day Service. Visit our website to stay abreast of all upcoming events.
