President’s Update

13 May 2022

Greetings!  We’ve had a busy three months within the Chapter and I’d like to cover a few of the most recent activities and update you on what’s ahead. We’ve continued with our  membership luncheon program and completed our annual renewal process.  We completed our annual JROTC Scholarship Program culminating in a recognition/ awards dinner held at Pinehurst Country Club. We started the process of updating our Chapter website, putting emphasis on informing our members and reaching out to potential new members and your Board has taken up decisions regarding fundraising and outreach initiatives.  Finally, we finished compiling, publishing, and distributing the 2022 Membership Roster.  We remain committed to our mission of “Continuing to Serve” and are grateful for all our members many contributions.  I am very proud of the efforts of your Board of Directors and am always available should you want to contact me regarding any aspect of the Chapters’s activities.

Walt Havenstein, 2022 Chapter President

  • Items of interest:
    • General Membership Meeting/Luncheon held at Pinehurst Country Club, number 9.  Ms. Lacy Pineiro from the North Carolina Department of Revenue briefed the members on current “Military Retirement Income and Taxation”.  Thanks to Nick Christopher for arranging for Ms. Pineiro to join us.
    • Completed our annual  chapter membership renewal process resulting in current total membership of 98, including 5 Active Duty and 9 Surviving Spouse members.  Thanks to Mike Oriet for leading this effort.
    • Reconciled, published and distributed an updated 2022 Membership Roster booklet.  First update since 2020.  We will be publishing errata pages as necessary, so please notify us of any needed changes/corrections.  Again, thanks to Mike Oriet’s diligence and leadership.
    • Resumed our in person JROTC Recognition/Awards Dinner.  The dinner was held at Pinehurst Country Club.  Seven $1,000 scholarships were awarded this year to a very deserving group of Cadets from across our area.  Special thanks to Drew Croucher for leading the scholarship program and to Ramsey Blanks for assisting in the arrangements.  I also want to thank the members who attended the dinner and brought special meaning for the Cadets.
    • Your Board of Directors approved a fundraiser for the fall.  We will be holding a “putting challenge” on November 10th at Pinehurst Country Club.  Diana DiStefano is leading this initiative in support of our ROTC Scholarship Program. Thanks Diana, more to follow.
    • Your Board of Directors approved participation in the “Wreaths Across America” initiative.  As an opportunity to enhance our community outreach effort and our veteran’s support program, we’ve decided to form a sponsorship group which means we will be selling wreaths at events where we currently participate.  Iggi Husar will be leading this initiative and providing more information soon.
    • Our chapter will be hosting this year’s Memorial Day services at the Pinehurst Village Chapel on Monday May 30th.  The service will begin at 3:00pm.  Be on the lookout for additional information from Bob Fazio who is leading this effort.
    • Our next General Membership Meeting/Luncheon will be on June 14th at the Pinecrest Inn.  We will be discussing membership and Col. Peter Dotto, USMC(Ret) will make a presentation regarding GenX/GenY veterans, a key source of future members of our chapter.  A separate announcement will be forthcoming and the cost will be $25.  Ramsey Blanks is spearheading this and other membership events.
