The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America (MOAA), will hold a special virtual Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 25, at 3 p.m.
In spite of the health challenges during this pandemic, the Sandhills Chapter of MOAA will not be deterred. Thanks to a gracious and generous team at the Pinehurst Village Chapel, Sandhills MOAA will present the event via internet streaming. This year’s service will be reduced slightly due to the limitations on assembling, but will be a great program featuring various participants.
The Memorial Day program will also be highlighted by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Thomas Taylor. Stephen Gourley of the Village Chapel and members of the 82nd Airborne Division’s Band and Chorus will present several pieces of Memorial Day music. We are very fortunate to have Reverend Dr. Jacobs hosting our program along with his presentation of the invocation and benediction. Admiral Leighton “Snuffy” Smith will present the featured address.
Admiral Smith retired with over 34 years of distinguished military service. As a naval aviator, he flew carrier based, light attack jet aircraft in the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. These included three cruises in waters off North Vietnam where he flew over 280 combat missions. He was appointed to four star rank in April 1994 and became Commander in Chief, U. S Naval Forces Europe and Commander in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe. He concurrently commanded the NATO led Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia until August 1996. In 2007, he was selected as a Distinguished Graduate of the US Naval Academy, the institution’s most prestigious award. Military awards include two Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 29 Air Medals. He has also received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, the French Order of National Merit with the rank of Grand Officer and, in March 1997, was made an Honorary Knight of the British Empire in a private audience with Her Majesty the Queen. Admiral Smith is a military hero, as well as a valued member of our Pinehurst community and we look forward to his insightful remarks.
Through the expert technical support of Mr. Chuck Sauls, we will stream the program on The Village Chapel YouTube Page, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtZJllusd_4VkaGuNT2EcTg?view_as=subscriber .
It will be posted at 3:00 at the top of the list for the 25th of May.
